Replanting of 7500 saplings at Dorbies Wood

Dorbies Wood, just off the A75 near Kirkcowan, has been clear felled of the Larch and Sitka Spruce that were planted there some fifty years ago.  The wood will be taken to the mill for milling into weatherboard for sheds and summerhouses, timber orders, fence panels and more.

The wood has been replanted with 7500 softwood saplings.  The saplings are an even split of Larch and Sitka Spruce specimens.  We're delighted with the quality of the saplings we received and are looking forward to seeing them mature over the coming decades.

We anticipate to take first thinnings of this plantation in approximately 15-20 years time, with second thinnings after about 40 years and the next clear fell taking place in the decade of 2070.  Quite frightening to think what we will all be doing then!

Firewood Delivery Revolution!!

We have just taken delivery of a bespoke tipping trailer that we designed and had built for us, to enable us to deliver firewood more efficiently.

See below for a clip of the trailer in action.  The video shows four crates worth being tipped at once.  However, the trailer is designed to be able to deliver four crates to different locations as it has four gated compartments that take a little over one crate load each. So crates can be delivered individually, or in loads of two, three or four. A huge leap forward for us to deliver firewood more effectively this year!

If you don't have the space or need for four crates, why not get together with your neighbours or others in your village to get four crates delivered and save yourselves some money?  We're happy to drop one or more crates at different locations in the same village or town for the multiple crate price.  Check out the firewood page for price information.

Get your firewood in early and be smug for the rest of the summer!

New Firewood Shed Erected!

Spring has been a busy time at the sawmill, not only with felling trees for milling, gathering up and processing next winter's firewood and fulfilling plenty of the usual Spring orders for fencing, panels and sheds BUT has also seen the erection of a brand new firewood shed.

The shed will enable us to store the filled crates of firewood under a canopy to prevent the Wigtownshire summer rain, (always more frequent than we would like!), from soaking the drying logs on a regular basis.  We have deliberately left wide gaps between the Yorkshire Boards so that the wind, (another regular feature of the Wigtownshire climate!), can get through to enable the logs to season well.  The open front enables plenty of sun to get in and help with the drying process too.

Charlie and the gang have been busy processing firewood too, so all of the crates are currently full and drying nicely in their new home!

Baby McNeill arrives - welcome to the world Archie!

Now that we've got the hang of the News updates, we can officially  introduce our son Archie to the world via the website!

Born on 7th February 2011 at 4.49am weighing 7lb 6oz, he has brought many smiles and happiness to the family.  It's a surprise he didn't come out with his hands over his ears as his Mum was processing firewood for much of his early development!

With big hands and a voracious appetite, he could well be employed in the mill and the wood before long!

Keep cosy through the Spring - Firewood still available!

Spring may be in the air but Jack Frost is still about here and there too!!  If your winter supply of logs is running short then give us a call as we still have some firewood available.  However, due to another year of exceptional demand, our hardwood stocks are running low, so please call ahead to check that we have what you need before coming to the sawmill.

The superb seasoned hardwood is all but gone, we have some more green hardwood logs, (cut this Spring), available.  They are mainly Birch so will burn quite well as far as green firewood goes but are not the same excellent quality as you will have experienced if you bought logs from us throughout the summer and winter of 2010.  Softwood logs are in plentiful supply.
